Why Are You Lost?

“You are free and that is why you are lost”. (http://www.kafka-online.info/franz-kafka-quotes.htm)

What does it mean to you to be free? Does it mean freedom from the ever-growing responsibilities in your life, or does it mean to live in a free country where you can say and think and do and be whatever you choose – within reason?

Or could it mean freedom from the mind, from the endless brain track looping that keeps us in the past or the future with only sparse and intermittent dips into the Present Moment?

And if you are free of that endless looping of the mind, where are you then? In the Present Moment. In the Present Moment, there is no future. Nor any past. So no wonder you might feel lost. You have no ego identity in the Present Moment. Ego identity is based upon the past; I am who I am today because of what I did and who I was yesterday. Yes – that is true. And how you feel and think about that past will tell you your level of awakening too.

There is a difference between living in the past and looking at it from the Present Moment. You know you are living in the past when you think of a situation and you still feel the emotional impact from that experience. When you look at the past from the Present Moment, you are able to be detached and say “Oh yes … this happened, this was my reaction and this is the lesson I concluded from that experience”. If it was a negative experience, you can also say from the Present Moment, “That was then and this is now – How can I see this situation from a more mature and understanding perspective so that I can release it and move on?”

The same applies to the future, and fear/worry/anxiety.

When the mind lets go of its identity, then it no longer knows who you are, where you are or why you are. Who you really are and where and why, can only be known at a deeper level of essence, and for that there are no words.
